Home From Forida

January 30 & 31, 2010,

Yesterday and today Rene and I drove home from Florida. Did it in two days. It was a good time to give my legs a rest. The 10 days in Florida were a great time to see where I was in my training. Great results. I feel good about where I am now and look forward to the month of February working hard inside on my trainer. The long rides I did, I kept my heart rate in a very comfortable range and it felt rather easy. No problems except for some back pain for short periods of time. Over one 7 day period I was able to do rides of 100, 50, 25, 25, 102, 44 and 106 miles. I am now fully committed to completing the mileage of the tour in July.

Total Distance for the week: 302 miles

Last Ride in Florida - Great One

January 29,2010,

A great ride today. Wanted to make my last ride in Florida a good one. The last 6 days I had already had 2 rides over 100 miles. Wanted to see if I could do one more in a seven day period. Did it! I did several different loops during the ride. Did not want to deal with the Florida traffic so I stayed in areas where there was no commercial traffic. I am now getting more confident that I can do the event. The only problem I had was around 3 hour mark when my right lower back started hurting. Slowed down a little and after about 15 minutes the pain went away and I was able to complete the ride without a problem. Had 4 GU gels and one Chomps to sustain myself. Obviously I had water and an energy drink. I will take the next two days off as we drive back to Jersey. The Spinerval workouts that I have been doing on my trainer are a definite plus. Will continue to do them in February.

Day After

January 28, 2010,

This was the first time that I did not feel good after a 100 miler. This will be my biggest 7 day period and it is catching up to me. Back was sore from some sciatica. I weathered the ride and plan on doing another 100 miler tomorrow. That would make 2 in 3 days and give me an idea what I have to look forward to this summer.

Another 100 Miler

January 27, 2010,

Had another great ride. Started out a little cool but turned beautiful. Just rode and did loops and then went and explored new areas. It is really amazing. Most men my age will get up and play 18 holes of golf and then have lunch and it will take about 5 hours to do that. I just get on my bike and go. I really enjoy the workout and challenge. Better than chasing a little white ball around. At least for now. These next two days I will try and keep them long also as we are heading back north in four days. Have to get in as many long rides as I can. Spending February in New Jersey will not give me much time to bike outside.

Total Distance: 102 miles

Recovery Days

January 25 & 26, 2010,

Used yesterday and today as easy days to ride an recover. Plan on going long the next three days. The weather has turned colder here in Florida, relatively speaking. In the morning it is in the 50s and rises to the 70s later in the day. Still windy. The wind is supposed to die down over the next several days. I am going to do another 100 miler tomorrow and maybe again on Friday. See where my mind and training are at.

In Florida Winds = Hills

January 24,2010,

Finished the week off with a good ride. Anxious to see how I would feel after the 103miler yesterday, I got an early start. Felt no effects from the ride yesterday. What I found out is that the terrain is perfectly flat in Florida, which I knew, but all it takes is strong winds and hills jump right at you. That was today. Wind was blowing at about 20 miles an hour and when riding into that, it feels like a major hill.

This week was good. Since I only rode 6 days and one of those days was only 10 miles, you can say that I had a good mileage week. I will be in Florida one more week and I am going to try and get another 100 miler in and if time allows back it up with at least a 4 hour ride.

100 + Miles

January 23, 2010

Great day. Finally got to do a 100 miler outside. The weather was cloudy and windy about 70 degrees but on average OK. Started at 7:30 and rode on all kinds of roads. Congested roads, highways and did loops around a mall. In all I felt great and was extremely encouraged that my training is helping me in the right way. The Spinerval workouts have definitely made me stronger as my average speed per mile is the best I have ever done. I had 3 GU goos and 1 pack of chumps. Plus water and an energy drink. No real food during the ride. Did the ride by myself as I am comfortable riding alone. Tomorrow I am going to try and go long again and see how I feel. Not a 100 miler but I want to stay out for several hours if the wind is not to bad.

All in all I feel great and my confidence that I can do this has really risen.

Florida Wind

January 22,2010,

Great to bike in shorts and a singlet. It was in the high 70s but very windy today. Stayed in my parents development where I can do a loop of about 20 miles. Did it twice today. Kept changing directions thus I was not constantly riding into the wind. Had a good workout. Tomorrow is supposed to be a perfect day so I am planning my 100 miler for tomorrow.

In Florida

January 19, 20 & 21, 2010,

Arrived in Florida yesterday. Tuesday was travel day. Rene and I had a peaceful ride to Florida. Made it to Daytona Beach from NJ. Got up in the morning on Wednesday and and finished the ride to my folks home. Weather is beautiful. Got a short ride in the afternoon. Felt good to ride easy after the long ride in the car.

Today I had planned to go for a 3 hour ride. While pumping my tires, one of the tubes blew. I only had one spare left. Changed the tire and decided not to go to far with no spare. Also the wind was really blowing. Had a good ride that I had to work. After the ride I went and bot 3 tubes so I will be prepared if a get another flat. Looking forward to several long rides in the next days.

Ready to Go to Florida

January 17, 2010,

Had a very easy day planned. My grand kids slept over so I knew I wouldn't have time for a long ride. Did core strength exercises and crunches and arm lifts. Then I biked easy for 2 hours. Will go easy tomorrow and then take Tuesday off as we head for Florida. Anxious to see how I will feel riding outside for 10 days after all these inside days on the trainer.

Early Morning Ride

January 16, 2010,

Couldn't sleep last night, so I got up at 4:30 and was on the bike by 5 am. Had a good 3 hour Spinerval workout followed by a good cool down. Can't wait to get outside next week in Florida. Feel good about all the training I have been doing. What is left to see is back to back long rides of 5 and 6 hours. Will try to do that next weekend. An easy ride tomorrow and Monday and then I will take my first day off from riding in a month as we drive to Florida.

Another Bonus Day Outside

January 15, 2010,

I was able to ride outside again today. Temperature just touched 40 but the wind was out of the west. I biked north and south so the wind was not to much of a factor. Found something very interesting today. I was able to keep my mph up in the 17 range by peddling in a higher gear and also with less rpm. So that tells me I am getting stronger in my legs. Heart rate was will in the aerobic range. I will have one more hard workout tomorrow indoors and then a couple of easy rides. I have not taken a day off the bike for over 3 weeks. This Tuesday I will have my first day off as I drive to Florida. Once down there we will see how the last several months of hard training pays off.

Finally Outside

January 13 & 14, 2010,

After an easy day yesterday, I was finally able to get outside today. The weather was sunny and the temperature was 38 degrees. The key was the wind was only blowing at about 5 miles an hour. With today's technical clothes I was totally comfortable throughout the ride. I finally was able to see the difference that the Spinerval workouts have provided. I can pedal a bigger gear with the same effort thus allowing me to go faster when needed. I am also able to keep my heart rate down so I am always at a low anaerobic pace. Looking forward to biking several long rides in Florida to see the real benefits.

OK Ride Today

January 12, 2010,

Good aerobic workout today. Just hanging in with these inside workouts. Can't wait to get outside again. Leaving for Florida in a week so I know that I will have a couple of weeks outside soon. Did a long Spinerval ride today. Kept my heart rate right below going anaerobic.

Easy Day

January 11, 2010,

I started the week with an easy ride today. Will probably do my core strength execises later today. Also I am going to try and ride outside later in the week as the temperature starts to warm a little. I believe my legs and body can take doing Spinerval workouts every other day. Will try that again this week as next week will be on my way to Florida and riding once again on the roads.

Best Week Yet

January 9 & 10, 2010,

I feel really good. I believe I just finished the best week of training yet. Yesterday, I did core strength exercises in the morning. I did not do my quad lifts because my quads were getting heavy and I wanted to give them a rest from lifting. In the afternoon I got on the bike to do a real easy ride since the day before I had that very hard Spinerval workout. I rode easy for 4 hours and felt good.

This morning I got up very early since my grandson is staying with us. I wanted to see how it would be biking so soon after finishing around 8 last night. No problem. Did a hard Spinerval for 1 3/4 hours. I really feel I am getting stronger.

This week I did 4 hard Spinerval workouts at varying lengths. One real long ride and two shorter rides. I also now have ridden for 18 straight days without a day off. I have two more weeks before I do 100 mile ride in Florida. I will continue to ride and do an hour to two hours for easy days.

The Hardest One Yet

January 7 & 8, 2010,

Yesterday was an easy day. I thought maybe I could get outside to do a quick 20 miles since the temperature was in the high 30s. But the wind was blowing and that brought the wind chill down to 28 degrees so I decided to stay inside. Did my core strength exercises in the morning and rode and easy ride in the afternoon.

Today was a different story. There is a 3 hour Spinerval workout that is simply brutal. You are working real hard for the full time. It was a struggle today but after threatening to quit several times, I did manage to finish the workout. When you do one as hard as this, you are hungry all day. Can't wait to go out to dinner tonight.

Peddle Hard and It Will Not Hurt

January 6, 2010,

I discovered a very interesting thing while I was biking today. I wanted this to be an easy ride. I started out on my trainer just peddling at a good easy pace. After a while my butt starts hurting and I get bored. So I put on an hour Spinerval DVD that was a very hard workout. What I found out is that the harder I worked on the bike, the less my butt hurt and the quicker the ride went. I guess I will mix it up. Today I did an hour and half easy than a very hard hour and then an easy 1/2 hour. Ride went quickly. Had a massage after the ride today. Wish I could do that everyday.

Another Hard Workout

January 5, 2010,

After an easy day yesterday, I picked out a hard Spinerval session to ride. It was a two hour workout where I was able to keep my heart rate in zones 3 and 4 for most of the workout. Considering that I will probably be in zones 1 and 2 when riding in the event, I feel good about working out hard. Gives me a lot of confidence.

Easy Day

January 4, 2010,

Wanted to take it easy after the 90 miler yesterday. Did my core strength exercies, quad lifts and arm lifts. After, I got on the bike for an easy ride. Felt good and even thought I could go much longer if I wanted to. Within the next several weeks I will start to put long days back to back. Just do not want to rush it.

Off to a Great Start for the New Year

January 3, 2010

Had a high intensity long ride today. It was tough. I spent over 3 hours in Zone 4 of my heart rate intensity chart. End the week with good mileage and I biked everyday. Also had a good week doing my core strength exercises. I am looking forward to going to Florida in a couple of weeks and riding outside and doing a 100 miler in Naples.

The Countdown Begins

January 1 & 2, 2009,

The new year is here and the serious cycling begins. I have decided that at least one day a week I will ride no more than an hour easy. That in essence will be my off day. Ride just to keep myself loose. I was consistently between 250 and 300 miles for the week the last several months and I will keep it between 300 and 400 miles for January and February. If the weather lets up any, I will go outside to ride. I have decided to get up early and do all my riding first thing each day. I will also make it a habit to do three core strength days a week. I can already see the improvement by doing them.

This month I am going to begin sending out emails telling everyone about my project and beginning to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Also I will be looking for up to 5 riders a day who might want to join me a day or two on the ride.I waited till the first of the year to make the final commitment. It is a done deal. A scary one but I know I am up for the challenge.
