Last Rest Day Before It All Starts

June 30, 2010,

Still felt a little tired so I took another day off. I believe one of the few times I have taken two days in a row off in the last 6 months. I know I can use the rest. Will go out tomorrow for a couple of hours and then again Friday before it all begins. Really hard to believe 11 months is here. I have gotten fairly good press coverage and I hope it generates interest that leads to more donations. I am 1/2 way to my goal of $20,000. $10,000 is not bad but I want to get to the 20.

The forecast for the first 3 days of riding is going to be unbearable. 90 to 95 degrees each day. These rides are long -- 140, 120 and then 130 miles. I will have to stay on the shore because inland will be way to hot. If it gets real bad I will finish the rides inside.

To Hot

June 29, 2010,

It was very hot outside this morning and I saw no need to ride. With just 4 days to go before I start, not much can be gained by riding in real hot weather now. Just took it easy and started to organize things. I have put the names of cancer survivors who have donated to the LAF on my bike. I have also added the name of my mother in law and a cousin both who battled cancer till the end. These are the people who I am riding for and will keep me going.

Saturday is the first day and is basically a ceremonial ride of 5 miles. I will be riding with the Jim Vaccaro, president of Central Jersey Bank my sponsor, my wife and a good friend Michael Abrams. Sunday is the first real test as the weather is supposed to be in the 90s and I have the longest ride of the event, 140 miles.

Slowing Down

June 28, 2010,

Seems that the virus left me during the night. Got a fairly good nights sleep. Was up early as usually. Left to bike at 6 am. It already was 80 degrees outside. The hot weather is supposed to break later today. I was weak since I did not eat yesterday so I went for a short ride. I am also winding down now as we are only 5 days away from the beginning of the event. It is getting a little scary but I will just have to take it one day at a time. I do not have anyone who has committed to ride with me and only two people to help with the support vehicle. So I have to rethink where I will ride and how I will get water. I tried carrying an extra bottle in my shirt and that was OK. I believe I will pass enough stores that I can get water. If it becomes a real problem I can always ride indoors for a day or two. That's the excitement of the unknown.

Sick Day

June 27,2010,

Today was the first day since I began training that I was sick. Must have caught a stomach virus. Had the chills and could not eat. Went into NYC to see my good friend Jim and his wife. After we came home. Had a little pasta and went to bed about 9 pm. Also I started sleeping in one of the extra bedrooms so I would not bother Rene and I would not hear her "snoring". Hopefully this will pass by tomorrow.

Exhausted

June 26,2010,

It finally hit me. Don't know why. But after today's ride I was exhausted and real tired. Last night we had company for dinner. Didn't have many carbs and went to bed at 11:30 after getting up at 4:30 in the morning. Today I was on the road at 6:00 and wanted to do another 5 hours. It was sunny and hot with some wind but not terrible. I started losing it at about 3 hours while on the Hook. I decided to head on home. Back was hurting. Once home I took an ice bath to revive my legs. Actually it felt very good. Plan on doing that during the event. Then I had pasta for lunch. Still could not get it together. Finally I just laid down and tried to sleep. I am drinking a lot of water as maybe I was just dehydrated. Will either take tomorrow off or go just for an hour or two. Less than a week to go.

I Am Ready to Start

June 25, 2010,

After 11 months of training I am really getting anxious. I keep telling myself, patience Phil. Had a good ride today. I went west on the course that I will use on the days I head west. This route has some good hills so I know I will have to work on these rides. Went for 5 hours today. Started the earliest I have ever started, 5:15 am. It was good. Roads were quiet and I was able to get to the quiet part of the ride before traffic started. Tomorrow I will do one more ride about this long and then really start to taper. The unknown awaits.

Rest Day

June 24, 2010,

I was going to ride this morning when I got up, but I already have 8 straight days and a rest day is really called for. Two more days for long rides upcoming up and then a I will really cut back the last week. I guess as the event progresses I will get stronger each week. By the time it is over I should really be in good shape.

Easy Does It

June 23, 2010,

Was going out for an easy ride. Did that but went longer than I had anticipated. It was so nice and I felt good. Getting anxious but I plan just two more long rides on Friday and Saturday. Opening day of the event has been scheduled. A week from this Saturday I will start at Central Jersey Bank's main headquarters in Ocean Township. The bank is my sponsor. I will ride with the bank president and my wife who said she will give it a try. It is a 5 mile ride, not to taxing for anyone. The real ride starts the next day with a 140 mile ride. Almost there.

Final Bike Tune Up

June 22, 2010,

Today was finally an easy ride. Went out headed south. Had to ride into the wind coming back but that is OK. As I said in an earlier blog, I have made friends with the wind. After I took my bike to the Peddler Bike shop and had the final tune up before the event. Will ride the next week and make sure the bike handles well. The weather is suppose to be nice on Friday and Saturday. I will use those two days as my last days of 50 miles and more. Sunday I am going into NYC so I will take that day off. All of next week I will really wind down and just ride to keep my legs loose. Almost there. Can't wait

Massage Time

June 21,2010,

Didn't realize how much I needed a massage today. After today's ride I got a massage. I haven't had one in several weeks and my back has tightened up so much that it was hard for me to stand straight. After the massage, no problem. The lady who gives me the massage is Olga. She is great. Anyone who needs a masseuse and lives in my area, she is the best.I will be getting several massages during the event.

It was hot today so I started early and had a good ride. As the temperature is getting consistently hot, I am losing weight and not putting it on. Oh well I am eating but I guess I need more carrot cake. That is my carbo dessert everyday.

Had a great Father's Day with my whole family. 4 generations of us at my daughter's home, a great day. Got up early to go for a ride. Good day and good ride. Will probably do my last long ride tomorrow morning. I keep saying that but I think this is it. Now only 12 days to the start of the event.

Very Easy Day

June 19, 2010,

I was going to take today off since we are gong to my grandson's birthday. We are scheduled to leave around 9:30. Once again I was up with the birds at 4:30 am. Once up I decide to go for an easy ride. It was spectacular outside. Sun was just coming up, not hot yet and peaceful. On the road at 5:45 am I just took it all in. Enjoyed the ride and now off to enjoy the family.

Let's Begin Now

June 18, 2010

After yesterday's long hard ride, I went on the flats to Sandy Hook. Stayed out the same time as yesterday. I find that when I ride west with hills my back does not hurt as much. When I ride on the flats my back tightens. I think it is because on the flats I am using the aero bars and riding with my back bent. Oh well.

After these two 5 hour rides I am ready to begin the tour. The toughest part now is the wait. I am trying to organize the event. I have a couple of people who will drive the support vehicle. Of the 7 riders who initially said they would ride a day or two with me, none have confirmed. No problem. Of the 11,000 miles I have done in training, over 95% of that has been alone. If I am alone it will allow me to get up real early and start to ride.

Great Ride

June 17, 2010,

Having planned to use today and tomorrow as my last long rides before the event begins, I got off to an EARLY start today. Was up at 4:30 am and on the road by 5:30am. When I ride myself during the event, I am going to leave real early to beat the traffic and the heat and the wind. Today the wind was blowing out of the west very hard between 15 and 25 miles per hour. I rode inland to minimize the wind and after about 40 miles I got on Highway 195 and took advantage of the wind. I averaged about 22 mph up and down the rolling hills. I was even stopped by a State Policeman. He didn't know I had a permit to ride on the highway. Said I was the only one who did. I like riding on the shoulder because there are no lights and cars to worry about.

I wound up in Sea Girt and had to fight the northwest wind home for 10 miles. When I finished the ride, I felt great. It was a real hard effort and I averaged he fastest I have ever done, 16.5 mph. Tomorrow I will go on the flats to the Hook and try to do another 5 to 6 hour ride. After that I will keep my longest ride to 4 hours for next week.

Rest Day

June 16,2010,

I have officially started to cut back and take more rest days as the event is only 2 1/2 weeks away. I biked 3 days and then took today off. Will bike fairly long tomorrow and Friday and then probably go easy or take a day off. Really don't know how to taper for this kind of event. I am ready to start now. After tomorrow I probably will keep it on flats and do now more than 50 miles when I ride.

The press releases have come out and they have started to generate some more donations and awareness of what I am doing. It is kind of exciting.

It was absolutely beautiful today. Left my home around 6:30 am and rode west. I started off following my typical route but midway I just decided to follow roads I had not traveled on. It Sure Is Quiet

June 14, 2010,

I have been getting up with the birds recently. In our town that is about 4:30 am. Once up I just get out of bed and begin to get ready to ride. Today I was out by 5:45am. It sure was quiet out there. I rode to Sandy Hook where I hardly saw a car. Extremely peaceful. It was cool and overcast but an enjoyable ride. I did loops on the Hook in preparation for days during the event where that might be the way to go.
Will start to cut back on the riding after this week as we approach two weeks to go.

June 12 & 13, 2010,

Took a rest day on Saturday. Well needed and I feel deserved. Today I got up at 4:30 am and was on the rode by 5:45 am. So peaceful at that time. I believe that it is going to be the time I will be leaving during the ride. Since I will be riding for about 7 to 10 hours each day, the earlier I leave the earlier in the day I get back.

Less than 3 weeks to go.Getting real anxious

A Short Ride Turns into a Long Ride

June 11,2010,

I thought today I would go out for a relaxing 50 miler. Two days ago I had the real hard interval. Yesterday I did 70 miles so today would be relaxing. Wrong. I started out and kept saying I feel good. So I wound up doing the 100 mile course. Worked it hard. Quads were tired but I kept at it. Turned into a good long effort. Tomorrow is a well deserved day off.

What is a Recovery Day?

June 10, 2010,

After doing a very hard Spinerval workout indoors yesterday, the instructor on the DVD said that after this workout take the next day off or just go out for an easy ride to recover. In my situation what is a recovery ride. I look at the schedule for the event and I don't see any recovery rides. So I went out and rode long. My recovery ride. Will ride long again tomorrow before taking off on Saturday.

Great Indoor Workout

June 9, 2010,

Back to the basics today. I couldn't sleep so I got up at 5 am and came downstairs to bike on the trainer. Did a very intense workout. Forgot how hard they were. But how great they were to get you into shape. I should have continued doing them once a week even when the weather got warm. Anyway I really worked hard during today's workout. Will do a couple more before the event.

Here is the Story

June 8, 2010,

For the past 2 weeks I have had what I believed to be a medical problem. Needless to say I was scarred that it might affect my doing the event. What was happening was my heart would periodically start to beat to the point where I could feel it beating. My first thought was more blood clots. I called the doctor and had a cat scan. That proved negative. First relief. Than I went to a cardiologist and had an echo gram. That also proved negative. Finally the doctor said I should take a stress test to make sure it was nothing really abnormal. Took the stress test this morning. The 34 year old doctor said he wished he was in as good a condition as I was. Called my test "pristine". So what was causing the the irregular heart beats. What I had thought all along. Excessive caffeine from the gels I have been taking. I now use caffeine free and and my heart beats are back to normal. A little scary but for a 64 year old, you have to check it all out.

I went for an afternoon ride and fought the win in one direction and rode with it in another. Felt good.

Crisp June Morning

June 7,2010,

Beautiful crisp day in June for a ride. Left around 6:30. It was in the high 50s so I had on a long sleeve shirt and a wind breaker. The wind was really blowing out of the north and west. Went to Sandy Hook. The trip out I averaged 14 miles per hour. The trip back I averaged over 16.5 per mile for the same effort, big difference. Love it when the wind is at your back. Going to speak to the bank tomorrow and see what they have planned for the promotion and support of the event. It is getting close now.

June 5, 2010,

I knew it was going to be hot today so I tried to get up an go early. Could only get out by 7 am. Rode inland into a west wind. I did the course that goes for 62 miles and then added some. Today was all about the search for water. I saw a lady watchng her husband cut the lawn and asked her for water. She filled up my bottle. Than I finally found a store when I needed water in both bottles. By the time I finished the temperature was approaching 90 degrees. Today is exactly one month from the start of the event.

Powerful Ride

June 4, 2010,

Beautiful day today to ride. Got out by 6:30 am and headed for the Sandy Hook. Did some loops there and then came back. Would have stayed out longer but had things to do. I really worked hard and thus covered the distance about 1 mile per hour faster than normal. That is a good difference. Wind was out of the Northwest but not to bad. I guess when I have a day off I get stronger. Everything is really working well for me now. Just have to keep it together for another 4 weeks till the event starts.

Saddle Sores Have Arrived

June 2, 2010,

It was so beautiful out today. I left at 6:30 am and had planned to ride about 50 miles. I just kept going and rode for 5 hours. It was beautiful. Felt OK. What I have gotten over the past few weeks has been saddle sores. For the first 9000 miles I have never had them. They aren't to bad. I put ointment on them before I ride. So far OK.

Looks like tomorrow I will take my first day off in 9 days. Gives me a chance to eat and put a pound or two back on my body.

Final Month Countdown

June 1, 2010,

Here we are one month to go before the event starts. Actually a month and 2 days but whose counting? I guess I am. Anxious and excited to get the event going. Went out for an early easy ride this morning. Much quieter along the shore than it was over the Memorial Day weekend. A lot of family and social events for the month of June. Will not do the miles I have been doing the past 2 months. Will still bike but not 100 milers.
