Ride in the Present

May 31, 2010,

Question today was how would I feel after yesterday's 120 mile bike ride. Answer is OK. In order to get up each day and do 100 miles day after day, your mind set has to always be in the present. Never think of what you will be doing tomorrow while riding today. Never think of tomorrow while hurting today. What happens is that once you are done for the day, recovery begins and by the start tomorrow you are mentally and physically in a positive mood.

Yesterday and today I went right into my swimming pool to soak my legs and lower back. The temperature is at 72 so it feels real cool. During the event I will get into ice baths after each ride. It really takes the sting out of the legs, they feel refreshed in a short time.

That's it for the month of May. I consider June a month just to maintain my condition. I have put in all the work for the past 6 months. I do not need more 100 milers. Will ride to stay fit both physically and mentally. I am now starting to coordinate the event. Looking for people to help drive the support vehicle and some riders to ride with for a day. I will have no more than 3 additional riders per day. I get phobic with a lot of riders.

Longest Ride Ever

May 30, 2010,

Today I had the longest ride I have ever done. Before today it was at the Ironman that I rode my bike 112 miles.Today was further and I believe that is the longest I will go before the event. Just as I train for the Marathon, I never run the full marathon in training. So I do not believe I need to bike 140 miles in training. When I finished I mentally saw myself doing the ride to Sea Girt and back which would give me the 140 miles. I could have done it.

After over 6000 miles of training, today I had my first close call. I have really tried to be extra careful. I was riding cross a small street. Saw a car on the other side of the rode who was making a turn and going in the same direction as me. OK no problem. All of a sudden it turns and heads across the street right into me. I yelled and he heard me and swerved back in the other direction. I was able to turn and he never hit me. He stopped and profusely apologize and said he never saw me. A little scary but all is OK.

I went inland today over the marked 100 mile course. This was the second time I rode the course. First time I did not realize how hilly the course is. You have to work. Also it is not a course to ride when there is a strong north wind as it was today.

Today I realized that you can not think about the next day while riding today. The way you feel at present will not give you good vibs for tomorrow. Today I realized that. Once you get off the bike, shower, eat and relax, than you can ponder the next day. Your mental attitude will be so much better and it will be easy to accept the thought that you have to go out and do it all over again.

By the way if I did not mention this before, I have shaved both my legs and arms. At least I have that in common with the pros. It is done just in case you fall. It will be easier to clean the wound and less chance for infection.

Have a great Memorial Day everyone.

A Leisurely Ride

May 29,2010,

I waited till the rain stopped this morning and then went out to ride. I wanted to go south to Spring Lake to see my friends at the Spring Lake 5 road race. Got there after the race but saw some friends cleaning up. Went on down to Sea Girt. Did some loops and headed home. Saw some other friends near home. Stopped and chatted. Just enjoyed the ride. Sun came out as I was finishing. Tomorrow I am going to do the 100miles inland loop that I will be using for the event. Tomorrow is suppose to like a hot July day in the high 80s.

I Struggled Today

May 28, 2010,

I don't know why but today was a struggle. Maybe because I was in New York City late last night. Maybe because my weight is getting down to around 140. Maybe the strong southeast wind got the best of me today. Who knows but it was not the best ride I have had. The good thing is that I finished it. After, I came back and had a big lunch to try and get some weight back on. The next 3 days are Memorial Weekend. Sunday and Monday are supposed to be sunny and hot. I am going to try and go real long one Sunday and follow it up with another long ride on Monday. After that it is only one month till the event. I am starting to get antsy waiting for this to begin.

What Happened to the Sun

May 27, 2010,

I left my home around 6:30 am and headed south to Sea Girt. It was a clear sunny sky. When I reach the southern most part of the ride and turned north again, I noticed a line of clouds over the horizon. Within 15 minutes it turned cooler and totally overcast. Amazing how the weather can change so quickly here on the shore. It was a relatively short ride so the weather didn't bother me much.

A Beautiful Day for a Ride

May 25, 2010,

What a great day today was. Sunny in the low 70s and only a small wind. Left before 7 and rode to Sandy Hook. I did 2 loops of 10 miles, 2 loops of 6 miles and 2 loops of 4 miles for a total of 40 miles on the Hook. Wanted to get use to the big loops as I probably will be doing that often during the event. Felt good. I met with the advertising agency for the bank and the press releases will be breaking next week. No turning back now. Just kidding. I am really looking forward to getting on with the event. Today I was thinking when I use to go out for a ride of 20 miles and considered it far. Times have changed.

I Am Tired

May 24, 2010,

Today was a rest day. I believe I needed it. I am getting up early each morning, 5:30 as that is when my body wakes up. Since the weather is warmer now, I am on the road no later than 7:00 Last night I fell asleep at 9:30. It is 4:30 in the afternoon now as I write this and I am tired and I didn't bike today.

I really think I am physically ready for the event. I am going to try and keep the long rides to 3 times a week and fill in with 30 to 50 mile rides on the other days. I am also going to start to cut back on quad lifts and my arm lifts. I think they are causing my back to tighten and with only about a month to go and I don't think there is much benefit any more. The biking itself is the exercise I need.

It was a Good Week

May 23, 2010,

I must say that this week was a real positive one. I started off slowly with a day off and then a 15 mile day. Then the week really picked up. When it was finished today with a short ride to beat the rain, I really felt good. Mentally I believe I can do this. It will be easier with people riding with me and with the support car with water and food. I am looking forward to the training being over and the "Tour" beginning. I am even starting to wonder what I will do with my time when this is over.

I am a Biker

May 22,2010,

Today was a major breakthrough for me. The last two days I have done 110 and 90 miles. Today I rode 20 miles to my friend Bruce's home. Bruce is a good biker and we rode together. I was able to stay with him most of the way. We were averaging between 18 to 20 mph and we did hills during the ride. I was able to get up those moving really well. When we were done, I did another 20 miles on my way home. A great three days back to back to back. My legs worked and I know now I am in way better shape on the bike than when I did the Ironman in Hawaii or when I was doing triathlons. I can peddle hard in the big gear now. I have to watch my weight because it is now down to 140. I am eating but burning about 5000 calories each long ride means I got to eat a lot.

Back to Back

May 21, 2010,

I had my first back to back long rides. Yesterday I did 110 miles and today I did 90 miles. Yesterday was inland with some hills and flats. Today I rode on the shore to the Hook and it was all flat. I struggled today for some reason. First 25 miles were OK but then my back started hurting on and off. I hung in there and after I while I was able to ride comfortably. It was tough today because I ran short of water, did not have anything to eat before I rode and was really not to motivated for some reason. But in the end I completed the first two long rides back to back. Tomorrow I am riding with my Bruce, a good rider. I will meet him at his home, 20 miles round trip from my home, and ride about 40 miles. So that means I will ride a minimum of 60 miles. If I survive the ride with him OK, I might continue and try and do about 5 hours. Will shall see.

Best Ride Ever

May 20, 2010,

I had the best ride ever today. A friend gave this 100 mile course that I picked up about 4 miles from my home. The weather was beautiful. The course was marked the whole way so I did not have to think where to go. From mile 30 to 85 a hardly saw a car. I was in farm country deep into western central Jersey.Even had some rolling hills which mixed up the ride. I could have been in Iowa for all I new. I had no clue for about 30 miles where I was. It was sunny in the 70s, a light wind and a most enjoyable ride. This will be my core route when I head inland during my "Tour". When I was done I know I could have gone another 20 to 30 miles on the flats on the shore. Tomorrow I will do between 80 and 100 miles just to see how I react after the long ride. I am excited!!!

Great Interval Workout

May 19, 2010,

It was raining outside again today so I did an indoor workout. I found a Spinerval DVD that I had not watched before. It was an hour and half long of an intense interval workout. Had my heart rate in the anaerobic range most of the workout. It really reminded me of my running days when I did intervals, extremely hard while doing them, but you felt great when you finished. That is how it was today. I am looking forward to tomorrow and Friday. The weather is suppose to be warm and sunny. I am going to plan to do 80 to 100 miles each day. Could only do a short ride this morning. We have to go to Philadelphia to my nephews college graduation. Got up early an did a quick 2 hours. Felt OK after yesterdays ride and last nights anniversary dinner. 39 years married to Rene. I also bought myself a present yesterday. I got the Garmin Edge 705 for my bike. It is great. While riding I have in front of me of my heart rate, speed, cadence, miles, time and if I am lost I have maps and GPS. Good Ride

May 15, 2010,

I got an early start this morning and headed west. Once I do my first 15 miles the roads turn country as I go thru horse country. Real beautiful ride thru Colts Neck. Enjoyed the ride this morning. When I headed back I needed a few more miles so I came back to the ocean and headed north for a while. Didn't go to far north because there was a strong wind out of the north. Just enough miles to give me the distance I wanted. Tonight I am going to dinner with Rene to celebrate our 39th anniversary. Would have liked to ride long again tomorrow, but we have to go to my nephew's college graduation. I will try and get up real early to get an easy ride in.

So far everything is moving forward. Of course the beauty of this whole journey is the unknown. Today I did 4 hours. During the event that would be only half a days ride. I believe it is all mental. We shall see.

Rode with Real Bikers

May 14, 2010,

Went out early again but today the weather was a little warmer, in the 50s. Went south to Sea Girt. On the way back, 5 hard core bikers came up to me in Belamr. Since the wind was a cross wind and a little at my back, I decided to see if I coud stay with them. I was in my big chain ring so I just started to peddle harder. To my surprise I was able to stay with them. We were riding about 22 mph. I stayed with them thru Deal and then I had to head back home. My heart rate got up into zone 4 but I felt like I could have stayed with them for several miles longer. But there really is no need to push it that hard for my rides. It is all about the miles and the dream not the competition and the race.

Just Me and the Birds

May 11, 2010,

After a day off I was anxious to get on the bike early in the day. Even though it was in the 40s, I was up and dressed in all my winter clothes even though it was mid May. I decided to ride to Sandy Hook. The wind was not to bad, though I knew it was there. Once I got on the Hook it was so peaceful. For those who don't not know what Sandy Hook is, let me tell you. It is a national park off of New Jersey. It is an island about 5 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. You can swim, boat, fish, run, walk just about do anything. One of the most popular things to do is bird watch. Just biking and watching the trees you see some really beautiful birds. Today because of the weather, there was no one on the Hook. Just me and the birds and it was peaceful. Once the warm weather comes and the sun, the people come in large numbers. I will enjoy the peace while I can.

What a Ride Today!

May 7, 2010,

Today was a special day on the bike. A lot happened. I left my home at 8:30 am and was going to do a long ride. I thought I would head south first, but got lazy and rode straight to Sandy Hook. My goal was to ride over a 100 miles today. From my home to the end of the Hook is 20 miles. When I got there I wanted to do several different loops on the Hook. This is what I did. 5 six and a half mile loops. Then I did 5 four mile loops. That gave me a total of 72 miles. Now I headed home. It is 20 miles to my home but I keep going all the way to Sea Girt which is another 22 miles round trip. As it turned out I rode 105 miles. That is the first part of the good day.

Today I came to peace with the wind. During the ride, I encountered the wind that first blew from the north. Than it changed to come from the west. Finally from mile 65 to 95 it was at least a 15 mph wind right in my face. The last 10 miles I had a tail wind and flew home. I have decided the wind is there why not be friends with it. When I rode into the wind, I just put my head down and peddled. If nothing else it will make me stronger but it will not defeat me. No more complaining about the wind.

Finally, I am starting to test what foods to eat while riding. Besides the gels and energy drink, I need to have regular food to put into my stomach. Today I had peanut butter on whole wheat. It was good, I needed it and it agreed with my stomach. I will keep trying different sandwiches as the rides get longer.

Great confidence builder today. If I had to go another 20 or 30 miles with the wind to my back, it would have been no problem.

I didn't eat before I left so I knew I would not be out for more than 4 hours. Road to Holmdel and then into Colts Neck. Found some new roads I had not be on. Horse country and beautiful. Beautiful day today. Since I have my grandson for 5 days at our home, I am trying to get on the bike early if the weather will let me. Today it did. I left the house at 7:00 am and headed for the Hook. The wind was a mild wind out of the west. Sun came out on the Hook. It was an enjoyable ride. Today I was listening to my iPod that had a whole variety of artists on it. After about 3 hours, I turned it off. Oh, how pleasant the quiet was. The Worst Type of Wind

May 3, 2010,

I read the other day the worst type of wind to ride in was a cross wind. I never realized that till today.I rode at noon since it was raining early in the day. The wind was out of the West South West. No problem I thought. It really was a west wind with a slight south bias. I rode south and then turned and rode north. Wind was probably a 15 mile an hour wind with gusts. I literally had to hold on to control the bike and keep from getting blown over. It is harder to ride with a cross wind than a wind into your face. There is no doubt that with strong winds I will have to ride inland. The winds on the shore are just to strong with nothing blocking them.

I had my second fall today. Please do not laugh while reading this. I was going to a port a john to piss. The bike had just about stopped. I detached my right leg from the peddle. The bike came to a stop and I realize my left left was still attached. Before I could unlock my shoe my body started falling to that side and down I went. Very embarrassing. A Pedestrian Ride

May 2, 2010,

Got up this morning and went for a ride. Really did not know how I would feel after yesterdays long ride and with the cramps that I got. I also have noticed that my weight has started to drop. Yesterday I was down to 139 after the ride. I think that is a little to low for me. I will have to start watching what I am eating now. Anyway once I got out on the roads this morning, I just peddled easy. Really did not have much enthusiasm for a hard ride. Even started to sight see on the way home. A Hot Day in May

May 1, 2010,

You don't really expect a day like today on May 1st. But we got one. It was beautiful and when I got on my bike at 8:00 am this morning the temperature was already in the mid 60s with predicted high of mid 80s. Really did not have the proper dinner last night when Rene and I went out with friends to have appetizers at the bar. I also had a beer. Starting today I am really watching my diet. No more alcohol and very little soda. I have to watch out that I don't dehydrated. After today's ride I am on the borderline.

I headed north thru Holmdel and then west thru Freehold to Clarksburg where I turned around and headed east to wind up in Masaquan where I then headed north to home. Wind was not a factor today. It was all about the heat. Good practice for July. Because of last night's dinner, I got up early and had a good breakfast. I can't drink milk so I had dry rice kripsy, banana and whole wheat english muffin with jelly. For my ride I brought jels and chomps with me. I had to stop and buy two more bottles of water and finished them all.

The problem I had was that for the first time on the bike I cramped in all my muscles in my right leg with about 15 miles to go. Bad! I stopped had more water and took a gel back. Rode the rest of the water easily, ver conscious of the cramping. Made it home and had a replacement drink, pasta, a bagel and more water. After I snacked on apricots and almonds. Almost time for dinner and I am hungry again. Still drinking water.
