Good End of Month Ride

February 28, 2010,

Today was a challenge to get on the bike. Spent last night at my daughters baby sitting my three grand children. Two of them kept waking me up during the night so I really did not get a nights sleep. Got home around three in the afternoon. Went right on the bike. Luckily I was able to watch the US-Canada Olympic hockey game that kept my attention. Was able to do a good steady ride to finish up the week and the month.

Down to 4 months of training before the event starts. Starting tomorrow I am going to really start to watch my diet. I want to be mean and thin for the ride. Will make sure I do my exercises and eat properly. At 64 it will take some good will power to get where I want to be. But I know I can get it done.

Excellent Workout

January 27, 2010,

After a rather easy week on the bike and with my cold better, I had a good hard workout today. Warmed up for about 1/2 hour and then did a 4 hour Spinerval workout really pushing myself. Felt good to get my heart rate in zone 4 and to work for an extended period of time. Actually the workout went real quick. Still rather be outside but today was not to bad.

Will the Snow Ever End?

February 25 & 26, 2010,

It started snowing yesterday and it has just stopped today. This is ridiculous. We have had more snow this February than ever before. Global warming? You have to be kidding. Took the day off yesterday because of a cold. Today I felt better. Had an easy bike. Tomorrow will do a hard Spinerval to get back on track. Can't wait to start going outside and biking. We are down to 4 months before the event. I am starting to get excited and a little scared. That makes it fun. The unknown is where the excitement is.

A Sick Day

February 25, 2010,

Today I just felt I had to rest. I have a bad cold and a day off was truly welcomed. By the end of the day I felt a little better. I actually did my core strength exercises plus my crunches and push ups. Rene is making me hot chicken soup for dinner, so there is no doubt that I will be able to ride tomorrow morning.

A Cold Has Arrived

February 24, 2010,

When I was training very hard in running, I always new I had reached a peak when I came down with a cold. I have not had a cold for over two years now, but I guess I most be in great shape because I awoke today with a cold. When I get them, they are really heavy for a couple of days. We shall see. I'll see how I feel tomorrow when I get up. Today I had a good ride. Not easy but not hard, just a good push.

Quality Ride

February 23, 2010,

Did not sleep at all last night. Had my grandson who was coughing at night and had things on my mind. Eventually got out of bed to work out at 6am. Had a long warm up followed by an intense Spinerval workout. With all the Spinervals I have been doing, when I get outside I have to be able to ride long and easy.

Easy Does It

February 22,2010,

Had an easy day today. Started off with my core strength exercises and some weight lifting. Than I rode for about an hour and half. Kept it at a low intensity. Sometimes it is good to just get on the bike and peddle easy. Watched TV while I rode and then called it a day.

Excellent Ride

February 21, 2010,

Tried something a little different. I wanted a long ride today. I started out by warming up and keeping an easy pace for 1 1/2 hours. Then I did a Spinerval workout for over 2 hours. That was a very intense workout. Keep my heart rate in Zone 3 and 4, mostly in zone 4. Really worked at it but it felt good. Then warmed down for 15 minutes. Overall the ride was a good one. Had my second good week by riding only 5 out of 7 days. The rest is very beneficial.

Complete Rest

February 20,2010,

Today was a complete rest day. No riding, no crunches, no push ups, NOTHING. Played with two of my grandchildren in NYC and enjoyed the day. I felt good. Tomorrow I am going to do another LONG ride. If the roads were a little cleaner and the wind would die down I would go outside. But that is not the case so tomorrow I will get on the bike inside and spin for about 5 hours.

Well Done!

February 19,2010,

Had a great ride today. Did a Spinerval workout. In my eyes it is the hardest of the Spinerval workouts I do. It is 3 hours and you are working hard the whole time. My heart rate was in Zone 3 & 4 most of the time. When I do a workout like this, I am hungry all day. I am going out to a good restaurant tonight and I will eat well. Tomorrow I will take a rest day as I have to go baby sit my grandson.

I am Ready for the Outdoors!

February 18, 2010,

After two hard days I was ready for an easy day today. I have been getting up very early every day and today was no different. Started off by doing my core strength exercises, crunches and push ups. That takes about an hour. I than rode for two hours keeping my heart rate right around 100 BPM and in zone two. Today was massage day so that came after my workout. I get one every other week, but I plan getting one every other day during the event. If Lance Armstrong can get a massage everyday I can get one every other day.

I am really getting bored riding inside now. With all the snow outside it is very depressing. What is keeping me really motivated are the donations that have been sent to the Lance Armstrong Foundation from my website. It is a tremendous motivator and once the cold weather is over and I am outside everyday I will really start to publicize the event and try to reach my goal as quickly as I can.

Two Hard Days in a Row

February 17, 2010,

Another pretty good day on the bike. I want to continue to put hard days back to back whenever I can. Hopefully that will begin to prepare me for the long rides this summer. Did another Spinerval workout this morning. What I find that is really great with biking as opposed to running, is that I recover much quicker between workouts when biking. Outside of my quads, my body is not beaten up like it is with running. This is a good thing. Makes me believe that the challenge during the event is going to be mostly mental. I welcome that challenge.

A Leisurely 6 Hour Ride

February 13 & 14, 2010,

Yesterday I had a good cardio workout by doing a long Spinerval ride. By doing those I am able to ride easy on my long rides and not tire. Today was a different workout. Wanted to get a long easy ride in and test myself mentally. Was able to accomplish it. Started at 10 in the morning and I finished up a little after 4 in the afternoon. Stated with CBS Sunday Morning show, went into Wall Street Report and then watched the lead in to the Daytona 500. Soon after the Olympics came on and then golf, which I enjoy the best. So while most people watching these events do so on their couch, I just rode my bike. Made sure to keep it challenging by constantly changing gears. I am now ready for a good dinner.

The week turned out OK even though I biked only 5 days out of the seven. Rest was welcomed.

Never Should Have Shoveled the Snow

February 11 & 12, 2010,

Yesterday was the day after the blizzard. I had to get the car dug out early because we were going to my grand daughter's 10th birthday. The guy who cleans our driveways always puts us last on the list so I could not wait. Big mistake. At least I got up early and did my ride. A good consistent bike. After, I shoveled the car out. Took about two hours lifting the heavy snow, almost 2 feet of it. I paid dearly for that all day and did not sleep that night.

Today, I biked late in the afternoon and felt a little better. I have to remember to keep the snow shoveling to a minimum from now on.

New Program

February 10,2010,

I have never seen so much snow come down so fast. We are right in the middle of a blizzard. I believe I have had enough of the snow already. I have decided for the next few weeks to not push it so hard. Want to bike between 4 and 5 days a week till March. Finding that my body responds better with a little more rest. Riding indoors is definitely more taxing on my body than outdoors. Discovered that after my rides in Florida.

Today I took the day off. Had a good core strength work out and did some light arm lifting that I do when I do my core exercises. Tomorrow I will ride again.

I am Not Young Anymore

February 9, 2010,

Sometimes I get carried away and think I am in my 20s again. I have to keep reminding myself that I will be 64 in 3 weeks and that I have to be aware that I am not "young" any more. I tried putting two killer workouts back to back over the weekend and I strained my knee. Took the day off yesterday and it felt much better today. Just have to remember I need recovery days and there is no need to push extra hard on the days I push it. This event is going to be more mental than physical I believe. I am extremely fit now and I am on track to being in the shape needed to complete the event. Just have to train mentally and I will be fine.

Time for a Break

February 7, 2010,

Wanted to make sure I rode today after the long ride yesterday. Have to get my body used to back to back long rides. Did a very easy ride this morning. Just watched the news and a motivational DVD. See how I feel tomorrow. If I am tired I will take a break. I am beginning to feel that I don't know how much more fitness I will gain by biking hard indoors. I am able to sit for many hours and that is the key element in me doing the event. I will just have to hang in there for the month of February till the weather breaks and I can go outside.

Snow, Snow & More Snow = Long Ride

February 6, 2010,

We were hit with a blizzard today and the snow just keep coming down. Nothing to do so I just got on my bike and rode on the trainer. I put on the TV with no sound and watched the European Golf Tour and the a college basketball game. Put on a 5 1/2 hour Spinerval DVD on my monitor and plugged in my iPod to the speaker and put on a long play list I created for long rides. Placed several Goos and Chomps to eat during the ride. Also set up 2 energy drinks and several bottles of water. I must say the ride went rather quickly. When you concentrate on the Spinerval and keep changing gears every couple of minutes you have to stay focused and time goes by. Of course I get off every several hours to run to the bathroom, but outside of that it is constant peddling.

Needless to say when I was done I was hungry. Had pasta with shrimp in it and my favorite carrot cake for dessert. What better way to spend a snowing Saturday!

A Mind Game

February 5, 2010,

Today I had planned to try and bike outdoors. The weather called for high 30s and very little wind. My grandson slept over again last night. Guess what. He was in our bed and still did not want to sleep. I was up on and off all night and up for good at 4:00 AM. Rene left with our grandson at 8:30 so I was ready to workout but it still was to cold. Should I wait a couple of hours or should I just go downstairs and ride the trainer. I was impatient so I got on the trainer. I did an hour high intensity Spinerval workout. Had my heart rate in the anaerobic range for a good part of the workout. Glad I got it over. With a snow storm due here tomorrow and the Super Bowl on Sunday, I am going to do two very long rides the next two days.

An Easy Day

February 4, 2010,

Lucky for me I had an easy day scheduled. My grandson slept over last night and he decided he did not want to sleep in a crib. Rene brought him into our bed where he lied next to me and I could not move. I was up most of the night. Today called for an easy effort so it was not to bad. Also I had a massage after the ride and I feel pretty good right now. Looking forward to maybe going outside tomorrow before the expected big snow arrives tomorrow night. The weather forecast calls for very light wind in the high 30s. Think I can ride outside.

A Tough but Good Ride

February 3, 2010,

Had a real good workout today. Did a Spinerval workout for 2 1/2 hours. It was intense and really kept me working. I enjoy the hard workouts because the time goes much faster. On all workouts over two hours I have been taking a GU goo every hour. Also I have an energy drink and water that I take. Take the goo to allow my body to adapt to the substance since I will be using them every hour during the event. They worked real well in Florida providing the energy I needed. I am falling into a good pattern of a Spinerval workout every other day. On the easy days I will ride for 2 to 3 hours easy. Finally I am concentrating on increasing my crunches that I do each day and my push ups. These I do daily as opposed to my core strength exercises that I do every other day.

Something New to do While Riding

February 2, 2010,

I have finally figured out how to balance my time to train with my time to work and be with Rene. I am breaking my day into 3 sections. I get up between 5:30 and 6 AM and immediately head downstairs to begin riding. I have allocated the morning for training. Anytime that is left over before lunch I am using for personal paper work and running my day to day affairs. After lunch, I am spending time developing a seminar called "Whatever It Takes". This will be part of my business model that I am putting together with my Life Coaching Business. Finally I am still building a business dealing with an Internet Shopping portal that I believe is unique enough that will someday soon become a presence in the Internet world. After dinner, I go back to work on the seminar and spend time reading. I have several books to read in order to fully develop the seminar. Also I spend some time when necessary on a musical play that I am developing with my daughter Call it a day between 9 and 10. Since I work at home I see Rene throughout the day. She is truly supportive in what I am doing.

Today I did something I have not done before while riding. When Rene and I drive home from Florida we listen to a book on tape. This time we were not able to finish the book. It was a mystery so I was anxious to hear the ending. 3 more CDs. Put them in and started to ride. It was an easy long ride but the time went quickly. I plan on alternating easy and hard days till I can get outside.

Fully Committed

February 1, 2010,

For the past 5 months I have been training hard on accomplishing my goal, but I still had some hesitation in my mind. Could I really do the mileage, how would I hold up mentally and would my body be able to take the rides. Well I have decided that I can do the mileage, that my 64 year old body will hold up and that I am mentally tough enough to complete the event. So later today I will be sending out emails to family, friends and others letting everyone know what I will be attempting to do. I am hoping to raise $20,000 for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and all support would be welcomed. I will also be looking for individuals who might want to help out in a support situation on any of the days of the event. If anyone wants to do one of the day's rides with me, please give me a call and I will tell you what you must be able to do. I can have up to 5 riders a day ride with me.

Today, I was back inside on my trainer. To be honest, I missed the workouts while I rode outside in Florida. The workouts on the trainer are a lot harder and I truly enjoy the challenge. Today I did a short Spinerval of an hour and half. Felt good after it was completed.
